Big Pharma’s Strategy to Crush 340B

down-arrow

For those who haven’t noticed, Big Pharma has a strategy to crush the the 340B program by eliminating the strongest 340B eligible organizations with a methodical misinformation campaign and then extinguishing the remainder at their leisure.

Here is how I read their playbook:iStock_000022162782_Large.jpg

Step 1. Undermine and demonize the larger 340B eligible healthcare organizations such as the big teaching hospitals which have financial resources and solid political connections.

Step 2. Convince Congress that the 340B program needs to be “reformed” (read eliminated) because Big Pharma’s own research shows these facilities are “gaming the system”.

Step 3. Leverage the power they gain through Steps 1 & 2 to then quietly squash the program entirely for all covered entities – community health centers, HIV clinics and rural hospitals included.

These attacks on our larger hospital systems should be an alarm to the leadership at all of the other much smaller and less politically-connected 340B covered entities. If anyone has mistakenly taken comfort in the thought that Big Pharma is only targeting large hospital systems, it’s time to wake up to the fact that Big Pharma has a strategy to eliminate the 340B program entirely.

Big Pharma knows it does not make sense to promote their anti-340B campaign by attacking Community Health Centers and Ryan White clinics. The strategy outlined above allows them to eliminate the 340B program for all covered entities quietly but surely.

For all of those people that understand the value of the 340B program to our communities, the time to stand up and be heard is now. I’m curious to hear from others in the industry. What should be done to fight this massive lobbying effort by Big Pharma?
